Deacon wants to re-write Hebrews chapter 11
By Greg Miller, Christian Syndicated Columnist and Writer/Author
Pastor Petra preached a series of messages from Hebrews chapter 11.
Pastor Petra announced, “I’m going to preach about each of the heroes of the chapter of faith.”
Pastor Petra preached the “Heroes of Faith” sermon series for several months. Pastor Petra focused on presenting the key aspects of each character’s life.
Abel was the character presented in Pastor Petra’s first sermon. “Abel was the first human being to be murdered,” said Pastor Petra. “And we have been murdering each other ever since.”
During the pastor’s sermon about Enoch, he said, “God translated Enoch. He didn’t die. ‘Before he his translation, he had this testimony, that he pleased God.’”
The pastor painted Abraham as the perfect example of a follower of God. Pastor Petra read from Hebrews 11:8-10, “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
“By faith, he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.
“For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
Moses was featured in one of the sermons. “Moses was one of the greatest men of God!,” Pastor Petra declared.
Moses, he said, “‘refused to be called the son of Pharoah’s daughter.’ He chose ‘to suffer affliction with the people of God,’ rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.
“God’s people today should take a lesson from Moses. Live a holy life, Brothers and Sisters, for in so doing, you will please the Sovereign Lord.”
“Amen, Pastor!,” shouted Deacon Peter. “Without holiness, no man shall see God!”
After the service, Deacon Peter walked up to Pastor Petra and said, “Pastor, I’m going to re-write Hebrews chapter 11.”
“Why are you going to do that?,” asked the pastor.
“All of those stories happened so long ago,” replied Deacon Peter. “I think some of today’s men of faith need to be included.”
“Whom do you plan to write about?,” asked Pastor Petra.
“I’m going to write about you, Pastor,” said Deacon Peter. “You’re a great example for us, and you preach God’s Word in power.”
“Thanks for the offer,” said Pastor Petra. “But I don’t feel worthy enough to be included in your project.
“And another thing, Deacon, you do realize that you can’t just be rewriting the Bible and adding and removing stories, don’t you?,” asked the pastor. “If you do something like that, you can’t call it the Bible, right?”
“That’s right,” acknowledged Deacon Peter. “The Bible was written as they were inspired by the Holy Spirit. I was just thinking of doing this because it was idea I came up with all by myself!”
