Junior's Cave Music Interview with Dolo The Bandit
May/June 2011 Edition
Music Now Spotlight by Isaac Davis Junior, BGS, MBA
Dolo The Bandit
Isaac: It’s an amazing time to be a DIY artist/performer/band/musician. What do you feel you contribute musically to the Indie Music Culture?
Dolo The Bandit: My contribution to the indie music culture is the major mass appeal music and marketing style I produce. I’ve become a purgatory level type of artist, not pop commercial like the artist pushed by the majors, yet not boxed into only an underground sound & market. I'm a new breed; best of both worlds.
Isaac: If you had an opportunity to sign with a major label, would you sign now knowing you may have to give up some of what you have build up over the years about you in the process?
Dolo The Bandit: Any deal has to be favorable to both business parties. I could never give up without getting in return. If it works for me and my best business interest, then so be it. There’s always a broker fee in any proposition; it's how we wash hands.
Isaac: I remembered Simon Cowell from American Idol talking about the “it” Factor that makes a musician/band stand out. What do you think is your “it” factor that makes you stand out from others in the music business?
Dolo The Bandit: My “it” factor would have to be my effortlessness. I don't try to be anything but me and I do it so naturally; whereas, most of what you see are pretenders, actors, having an identity crisis with their characters!
Isaac: List/Name one of the most important elements that will make you stand out from the rest of the musicians/artists in the music industry?
Dolo The Bandit: My respect for the craft. It allows me to dedicate a high level of intensity in every effort to the music.
Isaac: Do you feel you have given it your best when pursuing your musical dreams so far? Why or why not?
Dolo The Bandit: I have literally given my blood, sweat, and tears in pursuing this dream. But have I given my best? The answer is NO! I'm not at my best to be able to give it. I just go hard, there's medium or easy.

Isaac: Who do you look up to for your own influences and why?
Dolo The Bandit: Nas has always been a major influence since my early days. All the greats influence my appreciation for the culture and the music.
Isaac: Do you feel that Indie music gets the respect it deserves? Why or why not?
Dolo The Bandit: I feel like indie music is more respected than the major products put there. The underground circuit is so worldwide, It’s where the brands are made and the heart of music has hibernated. People are more aware of the unsigned or indie artist than the latest major act on the scene.
Isaac: If you could change one thing about the music business, what would it be and why?
Dolo The Bandit: I would change the monopoly system. Robbing a farmer of his crops to then sell it for your own profits, and pay him a penny of the proceeds. That shouldn't be the standard.
Isaac: What has been one of your biggest setbacks and how did you overcome it? What lesson did you learn about yourself?
Dolo The Bandit: My biggest setback was waiting on others to do what I should do for myself. Learned not to base my success off others failure. So I do ME and let the rest follow.
Isaac: What type of feedbacks have you been receiving about your music from fans and music critics?
Dolo The Bandit: My general response is a positive energy from the listeners. Exceeding the expectation of many who are accustomed to the frequencies out there now. I've become a pleasant surprise for everyone!
Isaac: If you knew that you would never gain fame and fortune with what you are doing now, would you continue to make music? Explain.
Dolo The Bandit: I will always make music because that's how I've done it from day one. I do it also for the love & passion of the art. Before the fame & fortune, you still wanted to be the illest around; that will never change with me.
Isaac: How do you handle negative feedback or negative energy about your music?
Dolo The Bandit: I take it in stride. Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it. Negativity has to be there to electrify the positive charges, so we like the haters; front and center.
Isaac: What role do your family and friends play in the equation of your pursuant of a music career?
Dolo The Bandit: They support me in the best ways they know how. I started this journey alone & didn't need any consigns or hand outs along the way. I earned every milestone and did it without the worry of having people in my corner ...save that room for my fans.
Isaac: What is the best site/s that you can be found on the Internet?
