Kotadama

It is always a pleasure to feature a returning band/artist/group back to our online pages. It is especially pleasing when someone we interviewed in the past is doing amazing things with their career now. This next group is one of these bands who are doing amazing things with their career.

We spoke to Kotadama back in March 2009 and had an awesome time learning more about the two member group featuring brothers Evan and Chris Brown. Today, the brothers are still making awesome music and creating their own special musical path. Here is the online conversation with Kotadama for your reading enjoyment.

Isaac: It’s an amazing time to be a DIY artist/performer/band/musician. What do you enjoy the most about being an indie performer?

Kotadama: We really enjoy having a clean slate to work from, no pressure to produce within a certain time frame or within a certain genre. Also, we believe that people that listen to our music do so because they enjoy it and not because it has been played so many times that you eventually like it.

Isaac: If you had an opportunity to sign with a major label, would you sign now knowing you may have to give up some of what you have build up over the years about you in the process?

Kotadama: It would completely depend on the conditions of the offer but it’s very unlikely. There’s not much incentive for indie artists to sign with major labels, I think in many cases it means sacrificing individuality.

Isaac: I remembered Simon Cowell from American Idol talking about the “it” Factor that makes a musician/band stand out. What do you think is your “it” factor that makes you stand out from others in the music business?

Kotadama: Well, these days, I think anyone can throw together a few meaningless lines, overdone vocal effects and throw in a random rap section in the middle 8…but I like to think our “It” factor is the music itself, we push ourselves to continually improve and evolve to make every lyric, melody, or hook count for something.

Isaac: Why should music fans listen to your music? Describe what they are going to get when they listen to Kotadama?

Kotadama: I believe music has the ability to affect everyone’s lives, and I think our music has this potential. Whether it is through love, joy, truth or inspiration, the listener will be taken on an emotional journey.

Isaac: Briefly describe your humble beginnings that led you to where you are at musically now.

Kotadama: We have been die hard U2 fans since before we were born and about 2 years ago my brother and I put our own tunes together. This soon developed into a passion and we found ourselves composing and performing our music at every opportunity....and two and a half years later, here we are.

Isaac: You have some strong iconic influences. Of these influences, which artist/band do you relate to the most and why?

Kotadama: No doubt, U2…, reasons too many to mention. However, their earlier songs really resonated with us on a cellular level and made contact with many themes relevant. These songs evoked an emotion from us, inspiring to hopefully do the same thing to others.

Isaac: Do you feel that Indie music gets the respect it deserves? Why or why not?

Kotadama: Probably not, in our opinion the big business of music and the major labels have a strangle hold on commercial radio and TV. Our experience thus far, has confirmed that there aren’t many commercial stations that will touch anything that does not form part of a well-funded marketing plan. (Alias major label)!

Isaac: If you could change one thing about the music business, what would it be and why?

Kotadama: It would have to be to tone down the control of recording/publishing companies and relinquish some input back to the fans. Perhaps this is a bit naïve, but it would be great to work in a more open industry were one’s work is assessed on its merits, and not on how successful the marketing campaign has been.

Isaac: Do you think in the near future that DIY artists/bands will be the norm and big record companies will be very limited?

Kotadama: Well, I think major labels and big record companies will always have a place in the music industry, but it would seem that the apparent monopoly of the big guys is starting to slide a fair bit. The tables are turning and more bands and musicians are deciding not to sell themselves out for a fast tracked, packaged trip to fame.

Isaac: What type of feedbacks have you been receiving about your music from fans and music critics?

Kotadama: We have received predominantly very encouraging and supportive feedback. Perhaps the most flattering and important feedback has been that of David Kershenbaum (who is now our producer and partner). And thus far we have had invitations to play all over the world.

Isaac: If you knew that you would never gain fame and fortune with what you are doing now, would you continue to make music? Explain.

Kotadama: We would definitely continue to the practical limit. Our parents have been very supportive to date but it would be unreasonable to expect their support forever, I guess we would press on as long as practicable. It would be naive of us to think we can “change the world”, but it would be great to think we could perhaps make some difference and perhaps touch the lives of others.

Isaac: How do you handle negative feedback or negative energy about your music?

Kotadama: Not well…… sometimes you just take it on the chin, it’s very important I think to never doubt yourself or let others affect you in a negative way. I think at the end of the day music is very subjective and you can’t please everyone.

Isaac: What role do your family and friends play in the equation of your pursuant of a music career?

Kotadama: Our parents, relations and friends are extremely supportive, we would not be where we are today without them.

Isaac: What is the best site/s that you can be found on the Internet?

Kotadama: Tons!

www.kotadama.com or www.myspace.com/kotadama or www.facebook.com/kotadama and www.twitter.com/kotadama

Isaac: The floor is yours; final words…..

Kotadama: Change your thoughts…….and you change your world!

Isaac:
